Barco introduces the first medical LCD display system for digital mammography

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 18 May 2004 – Barco is proud to announce the introduction of CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO, the latest member of its successful line of CORONIS® flat panel display systems. With its unmatched image accuracy and its outstanding image download speed, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO is the first medical LCD display system to meet the high demands of softcopy mammography. Combining proven CORONIS® technology with innovative, state-of-the-art functionality, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO refines clinical diagnosis and increases workflow productivity.
CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO offers exceptional image accuracy and high contrast images that allow radiologists to detect the most subtle masses and microcalcifications. What’s more, thanks to truly innovative, state-of-the-art technology, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO successfully counteracts problems that are typical of current LCD technology. To provide radiologists with the appropriate diagnostic confidence, Barco developed the unique Per Pixel Uniformity (PPU) technology. PPU measures and adjusts the luminance output at pixel level and eliminates screen noise, thereby making each individual pixel comply with DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) standards. Furthermore, to assure that no information is missing, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO is equipped with Defect Pixel Compensation (DPC) technology. DPC detects and identifies the defect pixels in each individual display.
CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO also features Barco’s I-GUARD® technology. A compact, front-mounted I-GUARD® sensor continually guards and adjusts the luminance output of the actual diagnostic viewing area at the front of the display, thereby ensuring consistent image quality and continuous DICOM accuracy over time and across displays.
Barco’s CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO display system comes with the high-speed BARCOMED® 5MP2FH display controller. Designed to bring more productivity to the mammography or radiology practice, the BARCOMED® 5MP2FH has 512 MB of memory, which enables loading of the entire current and prior exams in less than a second. Moreover, the display controller supports dual-head configurations and permits fast and smooth image roaming. Thanks to Barco’s dedicated BARCOMED® 5MP2FH display controller, medical professionals can progress smoothly through their diagnostic workflow without having to wait for images.
For exceptionally long lifetime, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO is equipped with DURALIGHT®, Barco’s revolutionary backlight technology. Compared to conventional Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL), the average lifetime of Barco’s DURALIGHT® backlights is prolonged by a factor of 3 to 5, without increasing power consumption. This means that there is no need to replace the backlight during the life span of the medical display, which substantially reduces the system’s cost of ownership. DURALIGHT® comes with a 5-year warranty.
Barco’s CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO will be on display at this year’s SCAR exhibition, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at the 31st National Conference on Breast Cancer, in Orlando, Florida, USA and at the 7th International Workshop on Digital Mammography in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA.
