Bonn University Hospital opts for Barco 6MP 30-inch softcopy display technology

Kortrijk, Belgium, 11 March 2010 – Medical imaging specialist Barco has received a significant display order from Agfa HealthCare, Mortsel, Belgium, as part of a large-scale hospital digitalization project in Germany. The displays will be installed throughout the radiology department and in some prioritized clinical departments of the University Hospital in Bonn (UKB). To ensure the highest image quality over time, the hospital will also deploy Barco's web-based service for intervention-free Quality Assurance.

“We are pleased to have been selected for this major Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), which will take diagnostic imaging at UKB to the forefront of PACS technology. Through our many years of close cooperation with Barco, we have been able to support the healthcare community with innovative and dependable imaging systems committed to supporting productivity and the physician's workflow in diagnostic imaging – a winning combination,” said Winfried Post, General Manager Agfa HealthCare D-A-CH.

Barco's comprehensive product catalog allowed UKB to select a state-of-the-art visualization solution for its hospital-wide imaging needs. For its radiology reading rooms, the hospital opted for Barco's breakthrough Coronis Fusion 6MP DL display system, featuring a unique
30-inch color LCD screen with a 3280 x 2048 resolution. Dr. Wolfgang Block, M.D., Head of Radiology at UKB and project leader of the RIS/PACS implementation commented: “With its Coronis Fusion 6MP DL, Barco has developed a diagnostic display system that perfectly responds to the needs of a modern, multi-modality radiology environment. Its extremely high brightness and contrast allows us to read color, grayscale and fused modalities simultaneously on a single, seamless display system to improve and facilitate our diagnostic decisions.”

Besides diagnostic displays, UKB has also ordered 80 units of the recently-launched Barco MDRC clinical review monitors. These 1.3 and 2 MegaPixel color medical displays will be used as review monitors in a number of hospital departments where access to radiology-quality images at the point of care is required. Thanks to their professional-quality LCD-panel and diagnostic-display quality backlight technology and preset DICOM-settings, the MDRCs provide physicians with more accurate grayscales, better contrast and a wider viewing angle than other displays on the market.

To maintain consistent image quality on all its PACS stations, UKB will also implement Barco's online Quality Assurance service, MediCal QAWeb. “With MediCal QAWeb, we will be able to access a full set of smart tools for display calibration, Quality Assurance and hospital-wide display fleet management from a single location saving us time and money,” explained Dr. Block. “In addition, our physicians and radiologists can be assured that their display stations everywhere in UKB will always be compliant with the highest quality standards, including the DIN guidelines.”
