Hospedia installs 15,000 Barco JAO smart bedside terminals in 21 UK NHS hospitals

Patients in 21 UK NHS hospitals will soon enjoy a surprisingly wide choice of entertainment and communication services, thanks to Barco’s JAO Point-of-Care smart terminals. Since 2010, Barco has delivered 15,000 units to Hospedia, the world’s leading provider of bedside Point-of-Care (POC) systems in healthcare, under a program to renew its entire fleet in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) hospitals. “The bedside terminals combined with Hospedia’s world-leading software are proving absolutely central to help hospitals cut costs while offering superb patient care,” said Hospedia's Commercial and Media Director, Ben Packman.

In its search for high-quality, reliable and maintenance-free Point-of-Care terminals, Hospedia chose Barco on account of the solutions’ design, quality, reliability and the open platform. Both companies have been partnering since 2010 and have renewed 15,000 terminals since then, a ratio of about 1,000 terminals per month.

As the rollout progressed, Hospedia increased the range of its applications: the terminals now also integrate the Hospedia Electronic Meal Ordering system and Hospedia can provide healthcare information directly to the patient's bedside, via the terminals. Furthermore, Hospedia has developed a facility enabling hospitals to meet the new requirement to monitor success and track performance by asking a standardized Net Promoter question to all patients at their point of discharge.

“We are delighted to be involved in this major renewal project for the NHS. The combination of our smart terminals and Hospedia’s software is making a huge impact, raising efficiency, improving patient stay and ultimately saving cost,” said Warren Kressinger-Dunn, VP of Barco healthcare Point-of-Care.

Managers at the hospitals are overwhelmingly positive. “Using the Hospedia terminal we've saved valuable investment funds,” testified Karen James, COO, University Hospital of South Manchester. Christine Pope, Retail & Patient Catering Manager, Serco LG&C Division, Derriford Hospital, who was one of the first to introduce meal ordering using the Hospedia terminals, added: “I am already seeing the benefits of it; the staff seem to love it as they can complete the whole ward in 20 minutes whereas on the old system it took them over an hour.”
