On 26 June last, in the midst of the FIFA World Cup madness, inhabitants of the Brazilian community of Manguinhos (Rio de Janeiro) were immersed into a totally different type of leisure: they welcomed ‘their’ very first movie theater. The Cine Teatro Eduardo Coutinho was established as part of the Favela Creative project, which aims to bring social and cultural projects to favela inhabitants. Barco was happy to support the project with a DP2K-23B digital cinema projector.
We all know that it is hard for children born in a favela to escape poverty. The Favela Creative Program aims to offer young, deprived people new opportunities, by introducing them to social and cultural events. The Cine Teatro Eduardo Coutinho, named after one of the best Brazilian filmmaker and documentarians, is the very first initiative of the program. Open from Fridays to Tuesdays, from 11am onwards, the cinema welcomes students and residents aged 65 or older of 16 communities in the Manguinhos neighborhood at a discounted price. To provide them with the very best cinema experience, the Cine Teatro is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including Barco’s DP2K-23B projector.
On 26 June last, the State Culture Secretary officially inaugurated the cinema. 202 children filled the brand-new theater to see the opening film, the Brazilian movie ‘Amazon’. 70% of them had never seen a film on the big screen before and were amazed to experience the 3D feeling. Barco was happy to help bring the magic of movies to life for this enthusiastic audience!
5 Views - Technical Training
Moreover, do you remember that other social inclusion project that Barco sponsors in Brazil? In 2011 and 2013 we provided classes about digital cinema projection and supplied digital cinema equipment and technology to the ‘5 Views – Technical Training in Audiovisual’ program, which serves the poor communities in Rio de Janeiro.
