Barco 2Kx2K LCD Air Traffic Control Displays Operational in US Army STARS Sites
As part of a worldwide program to replace aging CRT-based displays in US Army air traffic control facilities, Program Manager Air Traffic Control (PMATC) acquired a large number of Barco's industry-leading ISIS 2Kx2K LCD displays for installation by KAYA Associates into US Army STARS Systems.
Duluth, GA, USA — 19 October 2010 — Visualization pioneer Barco announced today that it provided its latest 2Kx2K LCD Air Traffic Control (ATC) displays to support the US Army's STARS (Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System) MDM (Main Display Monitor) replacement program. The STARS program is a joint venture between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to replace capacity-constrained, older technology systems at their terminal radar approach control facilities and associated towers. The STARS systems are designed to receive radar data and flight plan information, and present it to air traffic controllers on high resolution displays, which allows the controller to monitor, control and accept hand-off of air traffic.
Barco provided its 2Kx2K LCD ATC displays to the US Army to replace CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) units at numerous domestic sites, including Fort Polk, Fort Hood, Fort Rucker, Fort Drum, Fort Campbell and overseas installations in Germany and the Marshal Islands. In support of the Army, KAYA Associates used an accepted installation kit to replace the aging CRTs in existing STARS consoles in a turnkey fashion, and re-certified each working position to enable control of live air traffic. The approved Barco displays have been installed and operational at multiple sites since late-2009.
As the sole provider of the Barco Display Retrofit Kits installed at Army, Navy and Air Force sites, KAYA's air traffic control and fabrication division played an integral role in both the design and fabrication of the Barco Kits. KAYA's responsibilities for the Army sites with respect to Barco's monitors included: (1) receiving and shipping monitors to Army sites (both CONUS and OCONUS), (2) installation of the monitors to include the KAYA-provided Barco Display Retrofit Kits, and (3) monitor alignment and optimization. Barco provided the initial training and follow on customer support to the KAYA field team. The success of this upgrade program was due to the excellent working relationship between KAYA and Barco.
The ISIS 2Kx2K LCD displays are an ergonomic, lightweight solution for ATC controller working positions, featuring high brightness to enhance detail, while counteracting user eye fatigue. They have an extremely low life-cycle cost, since they do not require regular adjustments, and replacement of their backlight tray is less expensive and time-consuming than changing a traditional CRT.
“Our support of the STARS system enabled the US Army to implement this critical technology refresh in their efforts to ensure the safety of our nation's military air spaces and reduce the high maintenance costs associated with CRT technology,” commented John Dobroski, Market Manager, Air Traffic Management for Barco.
