BARCO Announces 20.1 Inch Rugged LCD Flicker Compensation Solution

LE BOURGET, PARIS, June 2, 1998 -- BARCO Display Systems announces the capability of integrating an LCD luminance flicker compensation solution into their RFD 251 20.1” color rugged flat panel display. This unique capability will enable naval operators to view acoustic sonar grams without the constant change in luminance (flicker) that is characteristic of LCD’s in these types of applications
LCD “flicker”, which is inherent in the majority of LCD flat panels when displaying high contrast, high density, moving data, has been a primary concern for the U.S. Navy for applications that require the display of sonar “waterfall” data. Over time, the continual luminance flicker can cause serious eye fatigue to the user, not to mention the difficulty in interpreting the information contained in the waterfall data. The BARCO RFD 20.1” rugged flat panel is the only LC display that has a proven, viable solution for LCD flicker. The BARCO LCD flicker compensation solution has been successfully demonstrated to the U.S. Navy at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) and in Washington, D.C., during a government-only series of presentations. It has been deemed as an acceptable solution and final sonar sensitivity testing is underway. The first order, in a series, is expected within 30 days. An application for an international patent on this unique technology has been made.

The BARCO RFD 251 was put through a series of performance comparison tests against seven other 20.1” LCD suppliers. These operational tests were divided into the following functional areas: acoustic signal data, video (taped and generated), electro-optical live video, cold soak testing and display photometric/radiometric characteristics. Even without flicker compensation, the RFD 251 display was ranked as the number one 20.1” LCD by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, MD.
