Barco at the core of the Forbidden City
Beijing, China, 21 November 2004 – The City that symbolizes ancient China and that was for such a long time Forbidden to foreigners, welcomes Belgium’s HRH Prince Philip, HRH Princess Mathilde and Barco at its heart.
Today HRH Prince Filip and HRH Pricess Mathilde of Belgium visited Barco’s virtual reality center at the Forbidden City. Designed, engineered and installed by Barco, the Virtual Reality theatre allows China’s VIP visitors to visit the Palace from a comfortable armchair. Three Barco Galaxy projectors deliver a single 13.5 meter-wide picture, immersing the audience in parts of the palace that are closed for the public. Visitors can see more relics and admire them in far greater detail as is possible in reality.
The system symbolizes Barco’s success in China where Barco is involved in all major infrastructure projects from utilities, hospitals, airports, ... over Beijing’s Olympic stadions, to Shanghai’s Formula 1 circuit.
Two years after adopting a new strategy focused on China, Barco is able to show the Belgian economic delegation, hosted by HRH Prince Filip, how it has achieved major successes getting involved in China’s economic miracle. Barco in China has grown threefold since 2001. In September 2003 Barco started its first production and R&D facility in China. Since then Barco has announced that it will pursue further expansion in the Chinese market.
The mission was welcomed by Barco’s chairman Professor Herman Daems: „Barco is proud to welcome your Royal Highnesses here at the place that symbolizes the rich cultural heritage of China. This installation shows how Barco merges Belgian and Chinese cultural riches and the highest technology, to become the dominant player for large screen displays in the Chinese market.“
