Barco D-Lites Bryan Adams

Barco’s new D-Lite 7 LED screen was one of the significant new additions to the European leg of Bryan Adams’ long-running world tour, writes Mike Mann. A pair of 4m x 2.7m portrait screens, each comprising over ¼ million LEDs divided into 54 tiles, were supplied by Show Presentation Services of London for the fourteen dates.
Ray White, who was responsible for the screens on tour, commented on the ergonomics of the design; “The crews have found the D-Lite very easy to rig – you just need a field that is relatively flat. The modules go together very quickly, and with the digitisers flown behind the screen, we just need signal, control and power cable to each screen.”

The video feed for the screen was provided by one of Nocturne Europe’s new all-digital production units – using the Barco system’s SDI connection to maintain the signals within the digital domain.

Despite taking place in the summer months, the European outdoor shows were beset by poor weather, and included two performances that were nearly washed out. Despite this, reported White, the screens behaved themselves. “This is a major advantage over CRT-based screens. We have tried to keep them covered of course, but sometimes you just can’t keep the rain off. I have seen water pouring off the back of the modules while the screens carried on working.”

White was equally impressed by the system’s performance in warmer weather, when absorption of heat from direct sunlight has previously been a problem for LED products. “The screens don’t seem worried by the extra heat at all – although I have the benefit of being able to check on them both from the comfort of a remote laptop!” he commented.

Chris Mounsor, director of Nocturne Europe, was also impressed by the new LED product, commenting that it seemed very well designed and built. “So much so,” he added, “that we’ve now bought 36 square meters of the D-Lite screen!” The new screen is currently touring with Bon Jovi.
