Barco delivers 360-degree display solution for Tactical COVE Ship Bridge Simulator

Washington, D.C. – Barco, under subcontract, will install the Tactical Conning Officer Virtual Environment (TaCOVE) Ship Bridge Simulator display system, which will be used by the U.S. Navy to train their officers in surface warfare Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection (AT/FP) operations. Twelve Barco single-chip DLP SIM 4 projection systems will create a blended, seamless image for the ultimate experience in immersive visual simulation. Barco’s complete solution also includes digital content display and multi-media system, 360-degree screen, comprehensive control and management center, peripherals devices, and system cabling.

“I was very impressed with the resulting system,” said Eugene Miller, Prime Contractor Senior Technical Leader. “It is one of the best bridge simulator visual display systems I have seen. The color balance and edge blending between channels was very good for the full range of conditions from full day light to deep night and for the range of visibility conditions including fog.”

“The Navy needed to meet the tactical Navigation, Seamanship and Shiphandling (NSS) training objectives of AT/FP and we listened,” said Phil Laney, Marketing Director for Simulation at Barco. “The U.S. Navy requires a high quality of edge blend to create a seamless, realistic image, and our SIM 4 projectors are a perfect match.”

Barco’s design was based on the design of its SimCad software tool, which allows ray tracing and shadow analysis. These features put the projectors in their ideal locations so they can perform at their optimum capabilities. It also allows for correct placement of edge blending plates. The SimCad tool allows projector geometry development and is loaded into the xRACU control system. Geometry settings from xRACU are then uploaded into all the projectors, minimizing installation time. SimCad design is further used to upload test patterns into Barco’s Polaris test pattern software, allowing all projectors to be aligned correctly.

Barco’s SIM 4 is a single-chip DLPTM projector with SXGA resolution, designed especially for simulation and immersive applications. It’s equipped with Barco’s Flex 4 geometry distortion technology, which is integrated in the projector’s compact industrial design, to support virtually any type of curved-screen application. Barco’s SIM 4 offers optional, proprietary Optical Soft Edge Matching (OSEM): custom-made optical filters to achieve truly seamless blending for multi-channel systems, maintaining full contrast ratio.
