Barco demonstrates “VCAD”: Virtual Collaboration, Analysis & Decision at Siggraph 2003

Designed and built in Barco Simulations' US headquarters in Xenia (Ohio), the VCAD is a dedicated system for collaborative visualization, analysis and decision-making. Using specially designed software, the VCAD can simultaneously display various types of large data sets on multiple displays. Key relationships between these data become intuitively apparent in stereoscopic 3D on the 150"x 60" / 3.8 x 1.5 m large central screen. Additional information can be displayed on the large LCD panels and monitors on both side wings.

Today’s information systems provide massive volumes of raw data. Barco’s VCAD is a revolutionary tool for visualizing and analyzing multifaceted data. The VCAD, using specially designed software, analyses large data sets and graphically renders key relationships within the data in stereo 3D. The users can utilize their cognitive skills for analyzing and decision-making, rather than for understanding where the data is coming from and going to.

As the Barco VCAD stereoscopic images can be highly interactive, users can graphically manipulate the information under study for detailed analysis, while enhancing collaboration by multi-disciplinary specialists and leading to faster and more accurate decision-making Auxiliary information supporting the decision process can also be simultaneously displayed on one of the many system displays. Thanks to near-real-time, simultaneous access to the current common picture, the VCAD system also allows simultaneous collaboration with other sites.

The Barco VCAD 2-channel center display is driven by Barco Galaxy WARP™ Active Stereo 3chip DLP™ projectors, allowing to use the VCAD even in high ambient light conditions. The 2560 x 1280 pixel resolution enables multiple viewers to view massive amounts of data with excellent detail and good text readability from edge-to-edge on the 150"x 60" / 3.8 x 1.5 m center screen. An optional Barco ViewScape™ video windowing system allows to overlay multiple video/data windows on top of the main display. A touch panel automation system provides simple user interface.

Whether the task at hand involves locating a terrorist network in a city of millions or isolating the optimal profile of visitors to a website out of a sea of demographic data, the Barco VCAD System provides a vital catalyst for accurately assessing complex situations and fostering correct decisions in a timely and efficient manner.

At the Barco Siggraph booth 2514 (Hall E) latest state-of-the-art visualization technology for virtual reality was demonstrated on the VCAD with applications for the Automotive industry, for Oil & Gas exploration, Medical Surgery training and Homeland Security.
