Barco extends flexibility and scalability of Networked Broadcast Monitoring System

IBC 2007, Amsterdam, the Netherlands – 7 September 2007 – Barco, a leader in display and visualization solutions for selected professional markets, has launched version 2.1 of its Networked Broadcast Monitoring System (NBMS). The launch brings a new display controller, able to handle up to 64 sources, and a range of new input modules. The additions to Barco's NBMS offer broadcasters more flexibility and scalability for the distribution of sources throughout their facility.

Barco's NBMS is a hard- and software suite that enables operators to monitor the broadcast process more efficiently and visualize real-time video content on rear-screen projection modules or LCD panels. The NBMS is specifically designed to support high-quality, low-latency distribution of video sources and metadata over an Internet Protocol (IP) network towards multiple screens.

The launch of NBMS 2.1 holds the addition of a new standalone display controller, as well as 3 new hot-swappable modules, which are front-accessible from Barco's 10-slot NBMS chassis:

  • The NGP-001 Display Controller allows to display up to 64 video sources on two high-resolution screens. The NGP-001 retrieves video, audio and metadata streams from the network and combines the decoded information into a single composed overview with an appropriate size for the display that presents the sources.
  • The 8-channel NGS-103 input module captures SDI and Composite Video signals, encodes them in JPEG-2000, and streams them out over a gigabit Ethernet network.
  • The NGS-104 Communication and Interface Module and NGS-107 General Purpose IO Module provide connectivity to legacy and third party equipment. They allow seamless integration of the NBMS into the control room operational environment.

Barco's NBMS was launched at the end of 2005 and has already been deployed by broadcast, telecom and media companies worldwide, including RTL TVI, Belgium; Eutelsat, France; PMU, France; TF1, France; Media Overseas, France; Technicolor, UK and Singapore; and TWI, UK. The NBMS is chosen for its scalability with virtually unlimited input and output ports and for its high flexibility to distribute sources to any viewer from rear projection displays to PCs. Additionally, the distributed IP-based architecture of the NBMS reduces the total investment for viewing and monitoring systems by significantly reducing the required router capacity and monitoring inputs.

Barco's NBMS 2.1 on show at IBC 2007
Barco will demonstrate the new NBMS system at this year's IBC exhibition, from 7 to 11 September 2007, at the RAI Convention Centre in Amsterdam, at booth #1.235.
