BARCO Introduces ISIS, the First Large Size 2Kx2K LCD Main Display for Air Traffic Control Applications

Paris, 22 September 2000 -- BARCO has designed ISIS, the first true large screen 2Kx2K LCD main display for ATC controller working positions. The 4 megapixel LCD displays and graphics controllers of the ISIS family combine performance, low lifecycle cost, user comfort and an open system environment into an innovative visualization architecture
BARCO's 4 megapixel, 20" x 20" ISIS flat panel main display exceeds the specification imposed by the ATC Community, resulting in more detailed and sharper images which remain stable over time. The enhanced LCD brightness and the excellent viewing angle counteract eye fatigue and present users with accurate information, even in difficult ambient light conditions.

The BARCO ISIS family offers a low-weight, low-depth ergonomic solution that can easily be installed into both new and existing ATC workstations. The efficient power supply and intelligent backlight system greatly reduce the heat output, and take considerably less console space than a CRT-based workstation. Moreover, the ISIS architecture has been designed to keep its functionality over time. The open system approach makes it possible to connect existing analog graphics controllers and change from analog to digital input at any point in time.

As opposed to CRT displays, which are notorious for their low contrast, changing colors, and degrading image sharpness, the images represented on the ISIS main display remain crisp and stable over time and across displays. The stabilized backlight output compensates the ageing effects of the backlight. This rules out discoloration of priority correlated labels and excludes annoying flicker and radiation. At any point in time ISIS will present identical information on distinct displays. Furthermore, the panel automatically adjusts to incoming signals and features Automatic Phase Adjust (APA). When connected to an analog system, the APA circuitry ensures that the image generated has no artifacts.

BARCO's ISIS LCD displays have an extremely low life cycle cost: they do not need regular adjustments, and the replacement of the four backlight trays is less expensive and time-consuming than changing a traditional CRT. Moreover, if one of the backlights fails, the image remains completely readable, a "must" for safe image interpretation. ISIS also features "Lifetime and Consistency Manager" software, which sends out prewarning messages that make it easier for system administrators to maintain the installed display base and project long-term plans for relamping

The BARCO ISIS product family features four flat panel versions: a chassis version for integration into workstations, a panel-mount version with front-side mounting, a monitor replacement version which offers a form-fit functional replacement for existing consoles and a desktop version, especially styled for use on office desks.

The input modules of the LCD displays can be filled with digital and/or analog input boards which process the data received from 2Kx2K graphics controllers. Any 2Kx2K graphics controller, including Barco's PVS 5611/T, can insert analog data. BarcoView has also designed the world's first 2Kx2K digital graphics controller, the PVS5611/TD, for use with the ISIS main displays.
