Barco introduces new powerful design and reviewing tools at Euro Catia Forum 2003

At the Euro Catia Forum in Paris, as a worldwide first, Barco gives a preview of its laser-based CADWall-Pen for 1:1 scale design and of its powerful multi-windowing ViewScape reviewing option. Tracking devices such as ART optical tracking and Haptic solutions from Haption provide the user with a high level of interaction with the images on the screen. These innovations will be demonstrated as well on the recently introduced Barco TRACE free standing active stereo display as on a two-channel stereo Barco CADWall with Galaxy WARP DLP stereo projectors.
Barco’s state of the art CADWall-Pen is a laser-based, high-resolution tool that will greatly facilitate collaborative designing, modeling and reviewing of a new product. Thanks to its high refresh rate pixel-accurate 1:1 scale drawings and modifications appear directly onto the 6 x 2,5m large screen of the Barco CADWall™, without any processing delay. Integrating this paperless design tool in the creating and reviewing process of a product fosters collaborative interactive design, improves design quality and considerably shortens the time to market of new products.

For collaborative reviewing, Barco demonstrates its new “Viewscape” multi-windowing option. The multi-input, multi-display ViewScape allows to show a multitude of windowed inputs from different sources, which can be dragged and resized over the total screen area of the multi-channel CADWall according to the needs of the viewers. This enables to compare different models, and various design solutions in real-time on one screen, see PowerPoint presentations or a video in separate windows or even conduct a videoconference whilst reviewing a design. The Barco Viewscape largely benefits the return on investment (ROI) of large visualization walls.

For interaction between designers and computer, Barco has integrated ART optical tracking in its CADWall™ and Trace systems at ECF. This contactless tracker system provides the highest accuracy, allowing a 6 degrees of freedom (6dof) tracking (3 position coordinates and 3 independent angular coordinates). Barco closely collaborates with leading suppliers of tracking systems (magnetic, optical, inertial…) and continuously evaluates state-of-the-art technologies to identify the best possible solution for any given project. At ECF, the ART optical tracking is on demonstration on Barco’s CADWall solution as well as on Barco’s Trace display powered by SUN v880. Trace is portable, fits trough a normal door opening and is scalable from one-channel to multi-channel for team collaboration and review

To expand the application range of V&AR, Barco introduces “Gemini”, an entry-level single-channel projection package for high-quality passive stereo viewing. The Gemini comprises two high-brightness circular polarized stereo projectors, a pre-aligned mechanical structure, a high-bandwidth active-to-passive stereo converter (Barco DUET II), and 10 perfectly matched deluxe stereo glasses. According to the application needs a high quality non-depolarizing proprietary front or rear screen is available as an option. In the hands-on demonstration running on the Gemini at ECF, visitors are invited to use the ‘Virtuose’ haptics device from Haption to disassemble the oil filter from an auxiliary power unit on a Falcon aircraft by Dassault Aviation. With its ‘Virtuose’, Haption provides a 6 Axis force feedback with a large working volume and high torques. It is particularly suited for virtual objects handling operations at scale 1 during the engineering process, to simulate the (dis)assembly or maintenance training.

By complementing its renowned CADWall with a portable, scaleable self standing visualization display “Trace” and an entry level passive stereo package “Gemini” and by introducing the “CADWall-Pen” for real-time design and the “Viewscape” for multi-windowing of different sources – and with partners for tracking and haptic solutions - Barco confirms its position as a leader offering complete and dedicated visualization solutions for interactive collaborative design and reviewing

You are kindly invited to come and see all these new Barco solutions and technologies at the ECF 2003 (4-6 November) Technifair in the Virtual Reality room. See you there!
