Barco introduces new version of its 3D medical imaging software and launches clinical application module for vessel analysis

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 30 May 2005 – Barco is proud to announce a significant upgrade of its advanced 3D visualization and analysis software. Incorporating significant technology advances for radiologists, this upgrade reduces their reading time, improves their performance and productivity, and enhances their workflow. As part of the new software release, Barco also launches a new clinical application software module for vessel analysis.
VOXAR 3D 5.1, Barco's upgraded 3D visualization and analysis software, provides radiologists with the ability to work with the increasingly large image studies produced by the newest generation of Computed Tomography (CT) scanners. Performance and usability enhancements have substantially improved the loading speed of these large image studies and the speed at which radiologists can interact with the study itself. VOXAR 3D version 5.1 also incorporates specular lighting effects that improve depth perception and surface detail to provide radiologists with enhanced views of patient anatomy. This significant upgrade aids 3D reviews of bones, vascular structures and soft tissue surfaces.

VESSELMETRIX, Barco's new VOXAR 3D vessel analysis module, provides radiologists with a clinical protocol-based workflow for quantitative analysis of contrast-enhanced Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) studies, including stenosis, stent and stent graft planning, and stent graft surveillance. The software has been designed to increase productivity, report key images faster and make the clinical task of reading CTA and MRA studies easier with minimal user intervention. Advanced functionality such as automatic centerline finding acts as a baseline for accurate vessel measurements and permits rapid segmentation of vessels.

VESSELMETRIX was initially introduced to Barco's Medical Advisory Board, a team of medical experts who are actively involved in evaluating Barco's medical imaging products for their clinical value. The board members extolled the benefits of the new vessel analysis software. Mark D. Herbst, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the board, said: "VESSELMETRIX makes vessel analysis very easy, taking the speed and reproducibility of the process to a higher level. With this new tool, users can rapidly segment the enhanced vessels from other anatomic structures, identify locations of maximum area or diameter stenosis, label important structures, plan for AAA endografts, and create summary image sets with all of the important features clearly marked. Even when contours or diameters need adjustment before calculations are done, the tools are so well conceived that they are intuitive from day one.”

“Barco's newly developed clinical software module VESSELMETRIX is a major milestone in the development of the VOXAR 3D software. The technology used to develop VESSELMETRIX is the same technology that VOXAR 3D users have come to rely on for the rapid, reading, reporting and distribution of images across the hospital network,” said Piet Candeel, Vice President of Barco’s Medical Imaging Systems business unit.

Barco's VOXAR 3D software is available as an integrated 3D software module within many of the world-leading PACS offerings and as a stand-alone 3D visualization and analysis software solution for customer sites without PACS.

Building on the success of the VOXAR 3D site license program, Barco has also introduced a number of enhancements aimed at streamlining the rollout and maintenance of software across customer sites. These include new options for centralized deployment and configuration, which make a site license easy to maintain, control and upgrade.
