BARCO Introduces Sur Acoustic Wave Touch Screen Option for the BARCO TCD 251 LCD Display
WASHINGTON, D.C. - At this year's ATCA exhibition, BarcoView premieres the Sur Acoustic Wave (SAW) Touch Screen option for the Barco TCD 251 LCD Display, allowing air traffic control operators to use direct-touch input instead of a pointing device to process data. Touch not only simplifies the inter between computers and their operators, but touch screen technology is also considered the de facto standard for many applications.
Barco's Sur Acoustic Wave (SAW) Touch Screen integrates the latest sur wave technology with Barco's TCD 251 High-Bright LCD Display. SAW touch screens are constructed from a glass overlay with transmitting and receiving piezoelectric transducers attached to the front sur of the glass for both the X and Y-axes. The touch screen controller sends a 5-megahertz signal to the transmitting transducer, which converts the signal into ultrasonic waves within the glass. Reflectors then direct these ultrasonic waves across the front sur of the touch screen. Reflectors on the opposite side gather and direct the waves to the receiving transducer, which reconverts them into an electrical signal - a digital map of the touch screen.When pressure is applied to the glass overlay, the received signal is compared to the stored digital map. The difference results in the calculation for both the X and Y coordinates. By measuring the amount of the signal that is absorbed, a Z-axis is also determined. The digitized coordinates are then transmitted to the computer for processing.Barco opted for SAW technology, rather than other touch screen technologies, because it minimizes the degradation of the display image. Constructed purely from glass, no films or layers degrade clarity and brightness of the image. SAW touch screens also have the highest touch-point resolution of 4095 X 4095. SAW technology is inherently stable or "drift-free" which means the touch response is always accurate and recalibration is unnecessary.Barco provided the TCD 251 Display with the SAW Touch Screen option since the of the TCD 251 Display is 20.1", the standard industry screen .
