Barco launches QA and calibration tool for mobile viewing of medical images on the iPad
Kortrijk, Belgium, 24 November 2011 – Healthcare imaging specialist Barco announces the launch of MediCal QAWeb Mobile, a QA and calibration software tool for use with mobile viewing applications to review clinical images. When integrated into a viewing application, QAWeb Mobile even enables diagnostic viewing of DICOM-quality images when medical professionals are away from their workstation.
“With nearly a quarter of radiologists and 80 percent of physicians using mobile devices in their medical practice, the interest in mobile viewing applications is increasing rapidly”, explains Danny Deroo, Senior Product Manager Diagnostic Display Systems. “We developed MediCal QAWeb Mobile to simplify the process of getting FDA clearance for such mobile viewing applications and to provide physicians with continuous access to DICOM-quality images.”
The software tool ensures fast visual calibration in just eight steps and offers a Visual Confidence Test, featuring up to 20 dynamic test patterns. The settings can easily be modified, based on the ambient light conditions, bringing a higher level of accuracy when reading studies remotely. This way, QAWeb Mobile allows medical professionals to review and even diagnose clinical images on their Apple iPad when integrated into the mobile viewing application.
Additionally, Barco's patented QAWeb Mobile methodology has been filed with the US Food and Drug Administration as a Master File, which allows healthcare developers and integrators to apply for FDA 510(k) clearance when using this add-on tool with their mobile viewing application. This will help reduce the regulatory effort for FDA clearance, leaving more time and resources for product development.
The new QAWeb Mobile software is the result of 20 years of experience in medical imaging calibration technology. It is built on Barco's MediCal QAWeb, the first online service for high-grade Quality Assurance. QAWeb Mobile makes use of a central server for access to all relevant calibration and QA data. It allows central management, including reporting and asset management, of all tablets in the hospital. QAWeb Mobile also features secured and HIPAA-compliant QA management, ensuring high-quality images at any location.
A free trial version of Barco's MediCal QAWeb Mobile software is available for download in the App Store (itunes.apple.com) and can be used with a licensed mobile viewing application on iPad 1 and iPad 2, trademarks of Apple Inc.
