Barco Partners with Pro Systems Providing Creative Visualization Solutions for "Top of the Rock"

For the event, the Ice Skating rink at Rockefeller was themed as the observation deck on top of 30 Rockefeller Center. The observation deck is undergoing an extensive renovation and is scheduled to open this fall for the first time since 1986. 

To add to the glamour and ambience of the evening, Tishman Speyer Properties sought to project the New York City skyline at sunset, shown in  full motion, and real time, on the east and west walls of the 100’ x 140’ tent that encases the ice rink. Tishmen Spever Properties turned to Pro Systems to provide the projection solution because of the company’s long-standing reputation as high tech problem solvers for high profile events.

Pro Systems created the effect by shooting off the top of 30 Rockefeller Center, the site of the observation deck, using HD DV Cameras. They used four cameras - two facing north and two facing south.

The video projection system consisted of six Barco R12+ projectors, three projecting onto the east wall of the tent and three projecting on the west wall of the tent. The playback system consisted of Barco’s Encore LC controller, six Encore Video processors, and one MatrixPRO RGBHV router.

Using the Encore’s data doubling and edge blending capabilities, they blended three R12+’s per side to create two - 18’ x 90’ image areas. They played the four  tapes back into the Barco Folsom Encore System. Using the PIP functions on the Encore, they were able to seamlessly stitch the images together to create a very wide, high- resolution, facsimile of the famed New York City skyline at sunset. At various times during the evening, they also used the movement features in the Encore to fly in and out Power Point Slides of the sponsor logos.
