BARCO Receives Follow-on Order from INDRA for Approach System Upgrade and En-Route System of Barcelona and Valencia Airports
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, USA, 2 November, 1998 – At this year’s ATCA exhibition, BARCO Display Systems announces a follow-on contract worth over USD 1.5 million, to supply commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) radar display subsystems and graphics controller boards to INDRA in Spain. INDRA will integrate the BARCO 2K subsystems into their ATC operator workstations for the further upgrade of both Barcelona and Valencia International Airports’ Approach System. Moreover, BARCO will also supply PCI 4800 graphics controllers for the En-Route Systems of both airports. Shipments for INDRA are scheduled to start beginning of 1999.
The BARCO radar display subsystems, which will be supplied for the upgrade of the Approach System of Barcelona International Airport and Valencia International Airport, include completely integrated dual head UNIX workstation configurations, including SPARC 8VT processor, BARCO’s powerful 2K resolution IVS4610 graphics controller and VRC1000 radar scan converter. The IVS4610 graphics controller offers superior X-windows performance, which is extremely critical for real-time ATC applications. The BARCO VRC1000 radar scan converter converts raw radar data into high-resolution rasterized RGB data, and allows the display of high-resolution radar images with color graphics over- and/or underlay.
In addition to the display subsystems, BARCO will also supply a series of PCI 4800 high-resolution graphics controllers for the En-Route Systems of both airports. The PCI 4800 is a graphics controller board for X-window applications, which provides exceptional graphics performance, and is ideally suited for real-time applications.
A major decision factor for INDRA to select BARCO for the upgrade of both Spanish airports, is the unique capability to integrate radar and synthetic data processing within an X-windows environment. The BARCO open architecture approach allows the combination of radar data with other synthetic data via digital mixing, which offers very high video quality, and guarantees that radar data can be displayed in real time without compromising the graphics performance.
Other decision factors were BARCO’s experience in ATC subsystems as well as in radar scan converter integration, and BARCO’s worldwide support capabilities.
