BARCO Selected by Hughes for Surface Search Radar Program
WASHINGTON, DC (March 25, 1997)…BARCO Chromatics has been awarded a significant contract by Hughes Naval and Maritime Systems, a business unit of Hughes Aircraft Company, located in Fullerton, California, to supply graphics controllers for the US Coast Guard’s Surface Search Radar (SSR) program.
Hughes will integrate the BARCO Chromatics IVS4000 controller into an advanced radar system initially targeted for the Hamilton Class (WHEC-378) High Endurance Cutters and the WPB-110 Island Class Patrol Boats. The SSR contract includes options for up to 791 systems over the next four years.
The BARCO Chromatics IVS4000 6U VME controller is a commercial off the shelf (COTS) product which supports the X-window standard and provides extremely fast image downloading to display graphical information in real time. This high performance graphics processing capability provided by the IVS4000 will enable the Hughes SSR system to display multiple tracked targets at high rates of speed.
The SSR will be utilized aboard 14 ship classes as well as with shore based vessel traffic systems and will become the next generation navigational radar system for both the Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy.
