Barco sells pioneering PACS displays to South-China's largest cancer center

Kortrijk, Belgium, 14 May 2009 – Barco has landed a significant contract to supply PACS display systems to the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center in Guangzhou, South-China. As part of an IT upgrade project, the cancer center will install a large number of Nio Fusion and Coronis Fusion display systems. These large-screen displays allow physicians to visualize various clinical modalities on a single diagnostic display station, without the hindering central bezel that is typical for a traditional PACS display setup.
The Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is a pioneer in the transition from film-based to film-less diagnostic imaging in China. Unlike healthcare facilities which continue to use analog and digital technology in parallel, the center has decided to convert completely to digital radiology. To achieve this, they will install a large number of Barco Nio Fusion and Coronis Fusion diagnostic display systems, which will help creating a highly efficient and comfortable reading environment.

“Our clinical staff greatly appreciates the value of Barco's multi-modality display systems for day-to-day cancer study and diagnosis,” testifies Professor Xie Chuan-Miao, Director of the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center's radiology department. “During early trials on a limited scale, we experienced that the large-screen 'Fusion' display stations enabled us to read and combine all color and grayscale modalities in a single, seamless reading environment. This enhances productivity and working comfort, which eventually results in better patient care,” Professor Xie adds.

Another important element in the choice for Barco was the company's long-standing reputation for quality and dependability in the medical market. Mr. Gan Feng, Head of the Cancer Center's Information Department, explains: “Thanks to the Barco 5-year warranty policy on all diagnostic displays, we will be under an excellent protection of our investment, and our staff and patients will benefit from a dependable visualization solution.”

The Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, where Barco's displays will be installed, is the largest specialized center for cancer treatment, training, research and prevention in southern China. It has about 1,000 in-patient beds and over 1,500 staff members with more than 100 senior specialists. As a renowned care center, it welcomes patients from all over China and Southeast Asia. To respond to the growing demand for healthcare from the growing population, the facility will soon open a new affiliate healthcare center in the area. This newly-formed hospital group will share its HIS, RIS and PACS data across the hospital group, which makes a smooth transition from film to filmless of crucial importance.
