Barco taps into Operating Room market with advanced surgical display

AORN 2006 Congress, WASHINGTON, DC, USA, 21 March 2006 - Medical imaging specialist Barco is proud to announce that the company is extending its medical imaging expertise to bring high-quality visualization solutions to the operating room market. Barco's market entry is supported by the introduction of an advanced color flat panel display for endoscopy and multi-modality near-patient use in the Operating Room (OR).
Barco's new MDSC-1119 surgical display has been designed to provide superior image accuracy, while meeting the unique patient safety and space requirements of the digital, integrated OR. The 19", 1.3 MegaPixel color LCD display presents surgical teams with artifact-free images and unsurpassed precision, offering them an accurate and reliable visualization solution for minimally invasive surgery and high-definition endoscopy.

"Barco has been developing visionary medical imaging solutions for more than 15 years," says Johan Stockman, Director Product Management Medical Imaging Systems at Barco. "Our solutions, ranging from premium diagnostic display systems to advanced 3D visualization and analysis software, are helping healthcare professionals to meet their most demanding imaging challenges. We are confident that our long-standing expertise will bring added value to the surgical imaging market and help surgeons to perform more precise and more efficient surgical procedures."

Barco's MDSC-1119 surgical display in depth

Barco's MDSC-1119 surgical display has been developed with the latest LCD technology to provide surgeons with superior image quality and stability. The MDSC-1119's high brightness makes it ideal for the OR's high ambient light conditions. Furthermore, the display's high contrast ratio, color depth and wide viewing angle add to the unsurpassed image quality. Barco's surgical display offers the fastest image transmission and broadcast quality video imaging available today, along with the greatest attention to signal integrity. Enhanced with Barco's innovative image processing algorithms, such as Response Time Improvement System (RTIS) and motion adaptive de-interlacing, the MDSC-1119 offers surgeons artifact- and lag-free images at all times.

The MDSC-1119's video bus architecture and modular slot concept allow the display to be configured to specific OR video connectivity requirements. Furthermore, Barco's surgical display readily supports new and future video formats, such as high-definition digital video.

The MDSC-1119 is a versatile multi-modality display for endoscopic cameras, room and boom cameras, ultrasound, cardiology, PACS, anesthesiology and patient information. This gives surgeons the flexibility and information they need to perform surgeries with maximum efficiency. Dual channel Picture-in-Picture or Picture-by-Picture views of images from multiple input signals give surgeons the required views, allowing them to make more informed decisions.

Barco's MDSC-1119 has been developed to meet the most stringent patient safety and design requirements relating to medical devices used in the sterile OR environment. The MDSC-1119 display features a fan-less design, which avoids the spread of contaminants and anesthetics. The MDSC-1119 includes a low-voltage, external DC power supply that can easily be routed through a boom structure up to 100 feet away from the display, far away from patients. The thin MDSC-1119 takes up a minimum of space in the OR's equipment-intensive environment. Its low weight and VESA compatibility makes the MDSC-1119 easy to handle and mount onto a cart or boom.

Barco's MDSC-1119 will be on show at the AORN 2006 Congress in Washington, DC.

Other Barco innovations for the OR

The introduction of Barco's MDSC-1119 surgical display follows other recent Barco innovations for the OR. In answer to the growing need for integration of Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) imaging in the OR, Barco recently introduced its NIO FUSION 4MP medical display system. NIO FUSION 4MP is an innovative high-resolution large-screen, 4 MegaPixel color display system, featuring a 30-inch screen that enables review of archived radiology images in full size without compromising on quality. NIO FUSION 4MP is Barco's most versatile OR viewing station for the display of a wide variety of patient data coming from the hospital's PACS network.
