BARCO to Play Leading Role in the 72nd Annual Academy Awards® Ceremony
Los Angeles, CA - BARCO has been selected to provide high performance display technology for the Academy Awards® ceremony, which will take place in Los Angeles. The celebration will be held in the Shrine Auditorium and hosted by renowned actor and comedian Billy Crystal. ABC will air the event nationwide on Sunday, March 26, 2000 starting at 5:30 p.m. (live PST/delayed EST). Presenters include Mel Gibson, Cameron Diaz, Tommy Lee Jones, and Uma Thurman, to name a few. Musical entertainment will include a special song medley to be performed by top recording artists Garth Brooks, Ray Charles, Isaac Hayes, Whitney Houston, and Queen Latifah. BARCO will provide five, Extreme Light Machine (ELM) R12 projectors to project spectacular video images onto the main stage. Three ELM R12 projectors will be used in a side-by-side configuration to project brilliant images with amazing light output of 36,000 ANSI lumens onto the 40’ x 22.5’ main stage screen. Two additional ELM R12 units, each with light output of 12,000 ANSI lumens, will be used to project brilliant images onto two 16’ x 12’ screens for audience viewing.
Michael B. Seligman, renowned producer and CEO of Seligman Entertainment Inc., will be the executive producer for the Oscar broadcast. Seligman has produced spectacular events including previous Oscar telecasts, the Emmy's, and America’s Millennium Celebration, presided by President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in Washington, DC on December 31, 1999. "DLP™ Technology was our only choice for the Academy Awards due to the brightness and high resolution we needed for one of the movie industry’s biggest events. BARCO’s ELM R12 provides the DLP™ technology and a very bright image that is necessary for this event. The audience in the Shrine Auditorium and the television audience will see the best images possible," said Seligman, "DLP™ technology is the future."
BARCO will provide five ELM R12 Extreme Light Machine projectors to the Academy Awards for the event. The projectors, equipped with high resolution Digital Light Processingä (DLP™) technology from Texas Instruments, will be used on the main stage screen, as well as two additional side stage screens.
