BARCO to Supply Rugged Flat Panel Displays for UK Navy Sea King Helicopter Upgrade
LE BOURGET, FRANCE, June 12, 1999 -- BARCO Display Systems has been selected by Racal Radar Defense Systems Ltd., UK, to supply 20.1" rugged color flat panel displays for upgrade of the Royal Navy’s fleet of Sea King helicopters to a new MK.7 standard. Racal will integrate 36 BARCO 20.1" RFD 251A rugged color LCD’s into a new radar system for the Sea King Airborne Early Warning (AEW) upgrade.
The Sea King MK.7 helicopters are being equipped with the Racal’s Searchwater 2000 radar system which includes a new mission system with improved displays (BARCO’s RFD 251A), increased functionality and improved communication capability.
Racal selected the BARCO RFD 251A commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) LCD for the new mission system, because the display successfully met an extended airborne vibration and other stringent environmental specifications required for reliable operation on carrier-based helicopters.
The 20.1" RFD 251A airborne flat panel design is a solid mechanical structure with a unique LCD bonding technique that protects the display’s optical stack against shock, vibration, extreme temperature, and humidity.
Delivery of the BARCO RFD 251A rugged color flat panel is planned to begin early July 1999 with the balance to be shipped over a time period extending to the year 2001.
