Barco wins substantial contract for Terrier vehicle program

SEA-AIR-SPACE, WASHINGTON D.C., USA, 6 April 2004 – Barco has won a substantial contract from BAE Systems RO Defence, for the delivery of BARCO VECTOR display systems and ALTIUM 4000 rugged computers. Barco’s visualization solutions will be integrated into the Terrier armored Combat Engineering Vehicle (CEV) of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). The Terrier program involves the supply of 60 Terrier vehicles. Each of these vehicles will include an ALTIUM® rugged computer and 5 BARCO VECTOR display systems. The Terrier CEV is the MOD’s new armored engineering vehicle, which is operated by a crew of two Royal Engineers. Terrier will clear and mark routes, prepare and clear obstacles, and dig vehicle slots in support of troops operating in the indirect fire zone of the battlefield. Terrier will also support peacekeeping and humanitarian tasks.
The BARCO VECTOR product family has been designed for observation, visualization and cockpit digitization on board armored vehicles. For this program, BAE Systems chose Barco’s 7” DM-1118 Display Module and 12” DM-1131 Display Module. The DM-1118 can display a wide range of camera and thermal images. Camera images can be overlaid with text On-Screen Display and full dynamic graphics overlay from the optional Symbol Generator. Barco’s DM-1131 unites a Panel Module (PM-1131) and a Video Control Module (VCM-1101) into a single ruggedized metal unit. The rugged metal housing has been tested for applications in the most extreme environments. Both BARCO VECTOR display systems are dual MIL CAN bus compliant and feature ACTEV, an easy-to-use HMI software toolbox that allows the customer to implement the end-user’s desired functionality into the BARCO VECTOR display system.

Next to the BARCO VECTOR display systems, the Terrier vehicles will also include Barco’s ALTIUM 4000 multi-functional rugged computer. ALTIUM 4000 bundles modularity, connectivity and performance into a MIL-tailored computing solution for the vehicle’s BITE (Built-In Test Equipment) and HUMS (Health and Usage Monitoring System) data and handbook viewer. The unit’s flexible design offers customization options, with room for functional expansion and technology upgrades (e.g. PC 104 or PCM/CIA cards). ALTIUM®’s modular concept offers a wide range of I/O options for project-specific configuration.

With the MIL-tailored and field-proven technology of BARCO VECTOR and ALTIUM, Barco offers BAE Systems a low risk solution for observation and vehicle management on board the Terrier. With an initial 5-year support period Barco strengthens its commitment to provide BAE Systems with long-term, qualitative visualization solutions.

BAE Systems has started receiving deliveries in March 2004.
