BARCO’s 29” Rugged Displays Chosen for U.S. Navy’s Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC)

SINGAPORE, May 6th, 1997 -- BARCO Chromatics has been awarded a contract, worth half a million dollars, to supply the U.S. Navy with BARCO’s 29 inch rugged displays for the Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC) program. Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division, located in St. Inigoes, Maryland, will integrate the BARCO MPRD 9874 display into the CATCC console.
The Navy selected the NDI MPRD 9874 monitor because of its extremely large viewing area, which is ideal for air traffic control applications requiring the large scale display for viewing air tracks under close control. The 29 inch large viewing area also allows for the clear display of multiple windows, which would be somewhat restricted on a 19 inch display. Another important factor for the selection of the BARCO display is a Magnetic Immunity System (MIS) feature which enables the monitor to operate in changing magnetic fields such as those found in a shipboard environment. The special MIS bezel surrounds and protects the display from image distortion.

The MPRD 9874 also has an ambient light control (ALC) feature with two sensors on the front of the monitor that automatically adjust the brightness of the display to the surrounding lighting conditions. The MPRD 9874 will automatically adjust the contrast ratio to adapt to white, blue, or low blue light levels.

Furthermore, the ALC function increases the monitor screen life thus reducing the overall display life-cycle cost.

BARCO’s exclusive orbiting capability on the MPRD 9874 minimizes the burn-in of phosphors by constantly rotating permanently displayed data. However, this image movement is unnoticeable to the display user. The long term effect of the orbiting feature results in an extended lifetime of the tube.

The Navy is expected to receive first deliveries of the BARCO MPRD 9874 in May of 1997. The CATCC system will be installed on all U.S. Navy aircraft and helicopter carriers.
