Barco’s Airport Display System raises service levels to passengers and airlines at Scotland’s Inverness Airport
ATCA, Washington, DC, USA, 28 October 2007 – Barco, a leader in professional display and visualization solutions, in cooperation with Marshall Aviation Services, Cambridge, UK, announces its OPScenter-based Airport Display System has entered operational service at Scotland’s Inverness Airport.
The Barco system provides five day radar cover for Inverness Airport. The contract was awarded to Barco as part of the upgrade to ATM services being carried out by Marshall Aviation Services, Cambridge, UK, in the summer of 2006. Under the terms of the contract Barco installed a radar display system for a new control room at Inverness Airport control tower.
The new Airport Display Solution replaces radar service previously provided Monday to Friday via an arrangement between National Air Traffic Services and the Ministry of Defence, using the radar heads at Royal Air Force Kinloss and Royal Air Force Lossiemouth. In the first phase of the Inverness Airport radar project, data from these radar heads is fed into the new radar control room at Inverness Airport’s air traffic control tower staffed by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) own radar controllers.
“Air traffic Controllers are delighted to be using the new system,” said Chris Stock, radar project manager at Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL). Mr. Stock continued: “We are confident that this project will help us deliver an enhanced service to airlines and passengers. Moreover, the system will also support the expansion of Inverness Airport as it continues to develop new routes to UK and European destinations.”
“The provision of local radar five days a week enhances the service provided to airlines at the airport and allows new approach procedures which reduce noise and cut down on fuel burn by aircraft as they land,” said Frank Köhne, Market Director at Barco’s Security & Monitoring Division. Mr. Köhne continued: “It also increases the number of aircraft movements Inverness Airport can handle in an hour, reducing delays to inbound aircraft.”
The system at Inverness is based on Barco’s OPScenter Airport Display Solutions, a component suite designed for efficient implementation and operation of high-performance mission-critical systems. OPScenter Airport Display Solutions have been widely used in the field of Air Traffic Control (ATC) as well as other command and control applications worldwide, mitigating program risk and reducing time to market while meeting increasingly demanding user expectations.
