Barco's avionics displays selected by NIIAO for new Kamov helicopter
KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 15 February 2005 – Barco has been awarded a significant contract by NIIAO (Zhukovsky, Moscow), the Russian Institute of Aircraft Equipment, for the delivery of high-performance avionics displays. Barco’s Control Display and Management Systems and Multi-Function Displays will be integrated into the cockpit of the new multi-purpose Kamov Ka-226 AG helicopter. For Barco, this contract represents a major step towards confirming its presence in the Russian Civil helicopter market.
Barco’s Control Display and Management Systems (CDMS) and 6 by 8 inch Multi-Function Displays (MFD-6.8/1) will be integrated by NIIAO into 18 Ka-226 AG helicopters of the Russian gas producing company Gazprom, Moscow, Russian Federation. The Ka-226 AG aircraft will perform a multitude of tasks, including transportation and pipeline area scanning. Each Ka-226 AG cockpit will contain one CDMS unit and two MFD-6.8/1 single box units. Furthermore, NIIAO will integrate its own Flight Management System onto Barco’s CDMS units. This order follows on earlier successful programs with NIIAO for the integration of Barco’s display solutions into the cockpits of Tupolev, Illyushin and Beriev aircraft.
The CDMS is Barco’s compact, light-weight Control Display and Management System with a sunlight-readable full color AMLCD. Customized keyboard panels can be made available, which allows the CDMS to fit into various avionics architectures for new aircraft as well as retrofit packages. Moreover, the CDMS is designed with passive cooling, making it a highly reliable solution that maintains low life cycle cost, even in harsh operating environments. The CDMS is available either with MIL-STD-1553 or ARINC 429 interfaces. NVIS-B and NVIS-A are optional.
Barco’s MFD-6.8/1 is a Multi-Function, primary flight instrumentation display with a sunlight readable 6” x 8” Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD). AMLCD technology ensures superior optical performance in terms of luminance, contrast and reflectivity. MFD smart displays support a wide range of platforms and interfaces, including ARINC 429, ARINC 708/453, analog video, serial and synchro.
The Ka-226 is a light-weight multi-purpose helicopter, capable of performing a wide range of tasks, including passenger or cargo operation, air ambulance, crop-spraying, pipeline patrol and military training. The Ka-226 AG features a coaxial rotor scheme with two three-blade rotors of a 13-m diameter. The coaxial rotor scheme makes the Ka-226 AG helicopter highly maneuverable and an ideal vehicle for maneuvering in the vicinity of various obstacles, and in particular, in turbulent atmosphere.
First deliveries of Barco’s CDMS and MFD-6.8/1 units to NIIAO took place at the end of 2004. Final shipments will occur in 2006.
