BARCO’s Control Display Unit Chosen for C-5 Galaxy Cockpit Upgrade

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, October 27, 1999 -- BARCO Display Systems has been selected by Honeywell Defense Avionics Systems, Albuquerque, New Mexico, to provide 200 Control Display Units for the cockpit upgrade of the C-5 Galaxy aircraft. BARCO’s 3" x 4" Multipurpose Control Display Unit (MCDU) will become part of the new glass cockpit that is integrated into the C-5 Galaxy A/C. Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems (LMAS), located in Marietta, Georgia, is the prime contractor for the C-5 upgrade program. The BARCO MCDU is an integral part of the avionics suite currently being provided by Honeywell to Lockheed Martin.
The C-5 Galaxy is one of the world’s largest aircraft. For over 20 years, because of its massive payload capability, the C-5 has been involved in many historic and strategic airlifts and is invaluable to the Air Force for both mission and humanitarian efforts, such as delivery of earthquake relief supplies and assistance with oil spill cleanup.

Honeywell selected the BARCO MCDU because it is the next generation of the highly successful CNI-MU delivered for the C-130J aircraft. The BARCO MCDU also is ARINC 739A compliant.

BARCO’s CDMS is a compact lightweight Control Display and Management system with a color sunlight-readable 3” x 4” Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD), providing high-brightness, excellent contrast and reduced volume with low power consumption. The unit is fully NVIS B compliant. NVIS A is also an option offered by BARCO. Different sizes of keyboard panels are available, allowing the CDMS to conform to various avionics architectures for both new and retrofit aircraft. The passive cooling design of the CDMS ensures high reliability while maintaining low life cycle costs, even in harsh operating environments.

BARCO’s CDMS hardware is fully modular, to allow flexibility of functionality as well as performance growth. The software has been developed using object-oriented design techniques to guarantee the highest possible modularity, maintainability, re-usability, robustness and safety of the system. This will enable customers to be in full control of the software functions and performance. The software also meets DO-178B Level B.

Delivery of the BARCO CDMS is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2000.
