BARCO’s Graphics Controllers Now Operational in Micro-EARTS at Shaw Air Force Base and Several Other DoD and FAA Sites

LE BOURGET, FRANCE, June 12, 1999 -- BARCO Display Systems is pleased to announce that the US Air Force and Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completed Operational Readiness Demonstration of the Microprocessor Enroute Automated Radar Tracking System (Micro-EARTS) at Shaw Air Force Base on March 11, 1999. Shaw Air Force Base selected the cost-efficient and state-of-the-art Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management’s (Rockville, MD) Micro-EARTS Controller Workstation (MCW), which incorporates commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, including Sony’s 2K x 2K monitors and BARCO Display Systems’ advanced PCI 4800 graphics controllers, to control their newly assigned airspace for training.
The BARCO PCI 4800 is a powerful 2048 x 2048 single board PCI graphics controller with extensive X-window support, which provides the Micro-EARTS system with optional capability to record and playback air traffic information in real-time, enhancing system safety by providing immediate event analysis. The PCI 4800 drawing acceleration functionality increases the graphics performance, which is very critical for time-symbology information applications such as air traffic control.

Lockheed Martin’s Micro-EARTS combines both en route and terminal ATC displays of air traffic data received from multiple short and long range radars. The new Micro-EARTS, with the BARCO PCI 4800 graphics controllers are now operational at over 10 FAA/Department of Defense (DoD) locations including Fairbanks, Fort Polk, San Juan, White Sands Missile Range, Guam and Honolulu CERAP sites, Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC), Nellis and Shaw Air Force Bases.

Additional Micro-EARTS workstations have been supplied to the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the FAA Williams J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
