BARCO’s Maritime Color Displays Obtain Germanischer Lloyd Approval and Are Ready to Implement ECDIS
KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, January 9, 1997 -- BARCO is proud to announce being the only shipboard display manufacturer in the maritime market to be both approved for Germanischer Lloyd and ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) ready for the ICD 321 display series.
BARCO has gained recognition for this unique market position due to the special design of the ICD 321 GL color displays which enables the monitors to operate in harsh maritime environmental conditions and maintain a consistent and perfect color purity.
The Germanischer Lloyd approval is a stringent testing and certification process which requires shipboard displays to meet strong vibration, rapid temperature variation and humidity specifications. Therefore, BARCO’s ICD 321 I GL (Industrial enclosure) and ICD 321 P GL (Panel mount enclosure) maritime displays are built and tested to meet all of the demanding environmental Germanischer Lloyd requirements. The wide range of operational specifications of the ICD 321 GL make the display also ideal for landbased or mobile applications.
The need for consistent color displays on board ships has become a major issue since the IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) standardized on navigational charts and selected specific colors for electronic charts comparable with the fixed colors on nautical paper charts.
However, this can only work if the colors on the electronic displays are constant throughout their lifetime. The colors on standard monitors may change so much that consistent color perception is impossible. This is particularly inherent on board ships where environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity change very rapidly, affecting the performance of the shipboard monitors.
With the BARCO ICD 321 GL monitors, the question of color deterioration does not arise. These monitors have been built for color-critical applications and are guaranteed for 100 percent color stability. Special features of the ICD 321 GL maritime displays include automatic stabilization and calibration tools, perfect color perception during night and daylight conditions, ambient light control and quick degauss functions, and an advanced electronic monitoring facility which stabilizes the black levels displayed on the screen.
The BARCO ICD 321 GL display is packaged either in an industrial or compact panel-mount version offering maritime integrators total flexibility for any shipboard system configuration.
