Barco's video and lighting solutions enliven Roger Waters' "The Wall" worldwide concert tour

In an effort to recreate rock band Pink Floyd's famous 1980's “The Wall” show, using the latest video technologies, producers of Roger Waters' current tour selected Barco's three-chip DLP® projectors, show controllers, and award-winning moving mirror luminaires to create dazzling imagery and effects.
Rancho Cordova, CA USA – 12 April 2011 – Visualization pioneer Barco is enhancing the magic of Roger Waters' “The Wall” tour as it continues around the world, providing a powerful combination of video and lighting equipment including: 15 FLM HD20 projectors, five FLM R22+ projectors, five Encore presentation systems, and from High End Systems – a Barco company - 32 Cyberlight 2.0 units and a Road Hog Full Boar console.

Show creative directors set out with the ambitious goal to authentically reproduce the concert venue and show created 30 years ago for Pink Floyd, including building an exact replica of the 1980 set. Fabricating the wall each night, brick-by-brick in sync with the video projection, is a laborious, yet essential task to maintain the integrity of the projections which display rotating scenery, dynamic backdrops and optical illusions. Barco's integrated lighting and video solutions enable the vivid, seamless projections to visualize the concepts in each song, such as bending bricks, wriggling worms, and other animated multi-dimensional effects.

To create the visual effect of building the wall brick-by-brick, fifteen FLM HD20 projectors are arranged in five stacks of three driven by the Encore presentation system,. The Encore keys a mask signal from a media server to reveal the video on the bricks as they are added to the wall. An additional five R22+ projectors cover a circular screen, adding another layer of imagery. A High End Systems Full Boar console ties it all together, providing live cues as well as programmed functions.

“We can always count on Barco for a highly stable, reliable platform and consistent image quality – an absolute must for a high-profile tour with this much complexity,” commented Phil Mercer, Managing Director of XL Video. “Barco's FLMs offer the best size/weight/brightness ratio ideal for touring, and are also economical: Barco products are able to accommodate our huge lensing requirements – up to 20 in Europe venues – eliminating the need for us to purchase thousands of dollars in additional lenses.”

“The Roger Waters tour is the perfect venue for harnessing the unique synergies of our video and lighting products,” commented Chris Colpaert, Strategic Marketing Director ProAV for Barco. “Pure, brilliant imagery, dramatic and surprising lighting displays, dynamic scenery builds – it's what Barco is all about: empowering the world's most iconic performers to take their art to unprecedented levels of immersive entertainment.”

Barco's FLM HD20 is a three-chip DLP, 20,000 lumens HD projector featuring extreme brightness and contrast to show crisp, clear images even in large, luminous environments. The Encore Presentation System is a modular, scalable system that supports up to 12 independent windows or six windows with seamless transitions, including dissolve, wipe, and other effects. The Cyberlight 2.0 is a 2000w hard edge moving mirror fixture with 30,000 lumens of light output. The Road Hog Full Boar is a robust lighting controller enabling users to create, manage, edit, and playback lighting.
