Dong Young iTech and Barco bring digital cinema to South Korea
Kortrijk, 26 October 2005 - The digital cinema revolution takes a significant step forward, as Dong Young iTech, Barco and QuVIS, Inc. collaborate on the worlds’ first full multiplex digital cinema conversion.
As part of the world's first full multiplex conversion, Barco announces that Korea's premier motion picture exhibitor, MegaBox Cineplex Inc., will be bringing Barco D-Cine Premiere DP90 and DP100 projectors to four multiplexes throughout Seoul, Korea.
The installation will include 22 Barco D-Cine Premiere DP100 projectors and 20 DP90 projectors, plus 50 QuVIS Cinema Players. The overall project, which debuts at the end of 2005, is part of a partnership between MegaBox Cineplex Inc. and Dong Young iTech (Seoul), one of the largest Korean cinema media technology companies. Dong Young iTech, a company that enjoys a strong relationship with Korean exhibitors, will provide technical support, content mastering and network delivery for the project.
Barco D-Cine projectors will be installed at four major multiplex sites in Seoul, including the MegaBox Coex site — the largest cinema complex in Korea with an annual audience exceeding 6 million people.
Shawn Kang, Dong Young’s senior manager, appreciates the opportunity to work with leading innovators in the digital cinema industry. “Barco has a reputation for high quality,” said Kang, “and they’re also capable of adhering to Dong Young’s high standards.”
Benhur Corporation is the integrator and mastering consultant in the MegaBox Cineplex project. According to Eun Huh, Benhur’s CEO, “Because of their intense focus on leading Korean cinema into the digital era, Dong Young truly stands out among current Korean high-tech companies.”
Nico Vernieuwe, Barco’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Media and Entertainment division, is a firm believer in the Korean digital cinema rollout. “Dong Young iTech demonstrates Korea’s strong will to excel in everything they do,” noted Vernieuwe, “and they’re always looking ahead of the game. Barco is proud to be selected by these high quality innovators, as they truly embody all the values for which Barco stands.”
Barco digital cinema technology is enhancing the extension of the digital cinema paradigm in Korea, and across the globe. The technology enables the projection of superb quality images, while simultaneously reducing the cost of producing and distributing films.
