Fletcher Allen Health Care invests in Barco diagnostic display systems

SIIM Annual Meeting, Charlotte, NC, USA, 4 June 2009 – Medical display specialist Barco has been selected by Vermont-based Fletcher Allen Health Care to supply a total of 24 Coronis Fusion 6MP DL display systems to be installed within the facility's radiology department. With the assistance of integration partner McKesson, installation of the Coronis Fusion 6MP (MegaPixel) color displays began in early 2009. The existing McKesson workstation monitors were all replaced with a pair of Barco 6MP monitors.

Fletcher Allen Health Care's purchase of the Barco Coronis Fusion 6MP DL color display provides an all-in-one solution for the radiology department's diagnostic workstations, enabling increased versatility and improved workflow. According to George M. Ebert, MD, PhD, Vice Chair of Imaging Technology, Director of Radiology Informatics at Fletcher Allen Health Care and Associate Professor of Radiology, University of Vermont College of Medicine, the facility needed to find the most advanced diagnostic monitors to match their highly advanced imaging equipment.

“The Barco Coronis Fusion 6MP DL solved all our problems,” said Ebert. “Almost all the images that we're now using have a color component to them, and because of that, we felt that the only way to solve this problem was to get a display that could do everything. The Coronis Fusion 6MP DL had the brightness and contrast ratios of a grayscale and the color capabilities of a color monitor.”

Barco's Coronis Fusion 6MP DL is the industry's first 6MP PACS display system for diagnostic imaging. The innovative display features a 30-inch workspace with no center bezel, giving radiologists the freedom to organize their desktop as one 6MP widescreen display, or two 3MP displays, in grayscale and color. The system enables users to read CT, MR, cath and echo cardiogram images or any other combination, side-by-side on a single diagnostic screen with full diagnostic detail.

“Using the McKesson viewports, I can create an optimal viewing configuration for every type of study. I have the viewing area of four portrait style monitors in a more flexible configuration, allowing me to read all cross-sectional imaging, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and plain x-rays in one location,” continued Ebert. “In addition I now have the room to compare the old and the new images side by side. The Coronis Fusion 6MP DL gives us a lot of versatility with its 30-inch format, and because the brightness can be adjusted from 500 to 800 cd/m², we can still read plain radiographs.”

Mike Sklar, Barco's Director for Medical Imaging, North America, stated: “We are very proud to be chosen by Fletcher Allen Health Care, a world-class faculty investing in state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging technology to provide the highest standard of patient care. We look forward to developing a multi-level relationship with the hospital, including technology evaluation and collaborative work that will benefit the needs of the radiologist.” “Working with Fletcher Allen will help us enhance our own technology innovation in the medical imaging domain, and our ability to provide solutions for those that invest in cutting-edge medical imaging technology,” noted Sklar.
