Gassco monitors gas transport to France and Belgium with Barco video wall

Kortrijk, October 20, 2008 – Visualization specialist Barco has signed a contract with Gassco for the installation of a control room at its receiving terminal in Zeebrugge, Belgium. From the facility Gassco will monitor the Zeepipe and Franpipe pipelines, delivering gas to both France and Belgium. The control room with a total value of close to a million euro, will be installed early 2009.

Gassco is responsible for transporting Norwegian gas to continental Europe and the UK in a safe and efficient way. In gas year 2008, the company carried 93.3 billion cubic meters of gas to market, corresponding to about 17 per cent of European gas consumption. To further optimize operational control, Gassco recently called on Barco to design and install a control room at its site in Zeebrugge, Belgium. From the control room both the Franpipe and Zeepipe will be monitored, bringing gas into the ports of Zeebrugge, Belgium and Dunkerque, France.

Pierre De Vos, plant manager for Gassco Zeebrugge, comments: “Gassco has a network of almost 8000 kilometers to transport gas to continental Europe and the UK. Essential for Gassco is to run the gas transport with the highest possible regularity, and to this end we decided to install a new control room in our receiving terminal in Zeebrugge.”

Pierre continues: “We have chosen Barco because we needed high standard visualization in our new control room. They have the image quality we need for this critical monitoring process. Moreover we have been cooperating with Barco for a long time and we are pleased to add our site to their impressive reference list.

In Zeebrugge, Barco will install a ten-cube display, featuring both analog and digital inputs, and the company will also take care of the complete control room design and integration. The display used is the 70” OV-715, featuring the proprietary Sense6 technology to continuously monitor and adjust screen quality to predefined standards. Total resolution of the video wall is 7000 x 2100 pixels, allowing to visualize all essential information to the operators in the control room. The system will be used to monitor the gas transport network in real-time, but will also display real-time video feeds from cameras around the terminal.
