Shaw Industries chooses Barco’s Optitwist system for US facility

Shaw Industries Inc. manufactures yarn for their commercial carpet division at Plant 67 in LaFayette, GA. Shaw has recently chosen to install the Optitwist system on all of their twisters at Plant 67 after a successful evaluation on one machine. During this evaluation, the plant saw an increase in production and an improvement in quality of the yarn supplied from the machine with Optitwist.

Optitwist uses an optical sensor to monitor each position on the twister for ends down and spindle speed. If a position is running slower than specified, the system calls the operator by means of a light tree at the end of the machine.

This allows the operator or technician to quickly correct the problem and reduces the potential for off quality production. Information on machine performance and efficiency is automatically stored in the Optitwist machine terminal, and can then be downloaded to a centralized system for reporting.

The 32 machines included in the project will be equipped with Barco’s latest data collection terminal. This data unit will feature a touch screen user interface and a standard OPC communication protocol to allow easy access to all information captured by the system.
