Successful flight test campaign for Barco's cockpit display solutions inside the Antonov AN-124-100M-150
KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 25 May 2005 – Barco’s cockpit display solutions have performed excellently during the successful flight test campaign of the newly upgraded AN-124-100M-150, the world’s largest civil freighter. Barco's smart displays were built into the aircraft’s crew cockpit by the Russian system integrator Kotlin-Novator, St. Petersburg, Russia. The flight test campaign follows an intensive modernization program, initiated among others by Volga-Dnepr Group, Moscow, Russia, the main provider of AN-124-100 aircraft services. Today, the results of this program have allowed the aircraft to make flights all over the world without any limitations.
During the test campaign, Barco’s 6 by 8 inch smart display units were used inside the AN-124-100M-150’s pilot cockpit and navigator station as Horizontal Situation Displays. Kotlin-Novator especially appreciated Barco's modular open system architecture, on which the displays were built, and which enabled the company to implement its own Flight Management System (FMS), radar and Terrain Awareness & Warning System (TAWS) software on the Barco display platforms. Kotlin-Novator also valued Barco's support during the integration phase and the smooth cooperation, which is based on the two companies’ successful and long-standing relationship.
The AN-124-100M-150 modernization program that preceded the flight test campaign included a significant cockpit update with the most contemporary navigation equipment that meets the latest Precision Area Navigation (P-RNAV) requirements. With Barco's smart navigation display units, displaying the weather radar information as overlay to the flight plan of Kotlin-Novator’s new FMS, Barco has contributed to the fact that the AN-124-100M-150 now fully meets the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations to fly in all western civil airspace.
The AN-124-100M-150 is the largest cargo aircraft in the world. Its high performance and unique transportation capabilities have been proved during the basic AN-124-100’s long commercial operation and now make it possible to airlift 150 tons of the most sensitive and fragile shipments in a controlled environment.
