U.S. Navy’s AN/UYQ-70 Program Provides Multi-Million Dollar Follow-on Orders For BARCO

WASHINGTON, DC (March 25, 1997)...BARCO Chromatics has been awarded several multi-million dollar follow-on orders to continue to supply both high performance graphics controllers and rugged color displays, by Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems, Eagan, MN, the prime contractor for the U.S. Navy’s AN/UYQ-70 display and computing system program.
Lockheed Martin originally selected the BARCO Chromatics CX4100 graphics controller due to the ability to bridge and emulate proprietary legacy systems with COTS technology. For the UYQ-70 display and computing system, BARCO was the only controller supplier that could provide the Navy with the unique capability of mixing graphics, radar and real time video data simultaneously. The UYQ-70 controller configuration consists of 12 memory planes for overlay graphics, 12 memory planes for underlay graphics integrated with radar and video windows.

The BARCO 19” RGN 651 and 14” RGN 639 rugged color displays utilized for the AN/UYQ-70 consoles have a special magnetic immune system (MIS) which enables the monitors to operate in a strong magnetic environment of up to 5 gauss. Displays aboard both surface ships and submarines are impacted by the earth’s magnetic fields, which means that the colors on the displays become distorted as the ship changes directions. The BARCO MIS capability cancels the interference by creating a magnetic field around the display tube.

Lockheed Martin is integrating both the BARCO graphics controllers and rugged displays into the UYQ-70 consoles which are currently being installed in all new build and upgrades for the U.S. Navy’s AEGIS surface ships. Other Navy programs planning to use the UYQ-70 include the new NSSN Submarine, E2C Surveillance Aircraft, the Ship Self Defense System (SSDS), and the Advanced Combat Direction System (ACDS), and Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC).
