Laser safety & regulation: forget the acronyms (part 1)

As you could read in our previous articles, very specific rules and legislation around laser safety exist that make the launch of a commercial laser projector a serious undertaking. This is confirmed, supported yet dreaded by all manufacturers. For historical reasons, laser-based products have to comply with different rules than the lamp-based projectors that have reigned the cinema landscape for almost a century. In this article we'll describe what those historical reasons are exactly; to which existing rules they have led and what the way forward is to get to easy, worry-free and scalable adoption of this technology. Numerous articles have been written on this topic, but most of them focus on a technical audience and juggle with acronyms and codes. In this article, we want to explain, in layman’s terms, what is going on in the industry.

Barco releases two new full HD LED-lit video wall modules

Following the successful release of the 4:3 models in the OverView M series last year, Barco now introduces two variants of the increasingly popular 16:9 aspect ratio. The OverView MVL-621 and OverView MVL-721 are industry-standard modules with full HD resolution and screen diameters of 60” and 70”, respectively. These models, designed to fit the requirements of medium-sized industry-standard control rooms, will further enlarge Barco's footprint in the control rooms market.

The ‘summer of film’ in eastern Europe

With no fewer than five film festivals scheduled in the space of barely two months, eastern Europe really is the place to be for film makers, film enthusiasts and film experts, this summer. The eastern European film summer kicked off at the Pula Film Festival in Croatia, on 13 July last, to conclude with the Jameson Cinefest on 12 September. In support of these initiatives, Barco is supplying an array of digital cinema projectors for the screenings. During the opening ceremony in Pula, our projectors also enabled a spectacular 3D projection mapping.

Projection mapping à la ‘Spectaculaires’

This definitely is a busy summer for Spectaculaires, a French expert in highly creative light and sound spectacles. Between this April and September, no fewer than 11 light spectacles are on Spectaculaires’ agenda. One of the highlights is an amazing 360° projection mapping at the Palais des Papes, in the heart of Avignon (15 August - 28 September). Barco projectors help Spectaculaires tell the story of ‘The Popes’ Palace’. In Cabours, Bayeux, Nancy, Paris and even in Brazil, Barco also supports Spectaculaires to put on shows that ‘make people dream’.

Moviegoers applaud Auro 11.1 by Barco at Carmike’s debut of “Turbo”

Carmike Cinemas Riverstone 15 in Canton, Georgia recently unveiled DreamWorks Animation’s “Turbo” in Auro 11.1 by Barco. As the region’s first to offer this one-of-a-kind immersive cinema audio, it amazed audiences with true-to-life, 3D audio sound. As one moviegoer described it, “When the jets flew over at the beginning of the race, that was really cool. [It] felt like it was actual fighter jets coming from behind! You felt like you were in the action.”
