The futurist Autostadt (‘Car City’), located in Wolfsburg near Volkswagen’s headquarters, is a visitor center, a museum, a conference center, as well as an elaborate park with lakes, pavilions and hills. It boasts the biggest glass doors in the world, and also houses the world’s longest printed line. Each of its pavilions is dedicated to one of the brands in Volkswagen’s portfolio: Audi, Bentley, Skoda, Lamborghini, SEAT and of course Volkswagen itself.
Because Autostadt welcomes about 2 million visitors annually, its visualization technology needs to be of the highest quality and reliability, running 12 hours a day on 52 weeks. As the strongest capability of Barco’s systems proved to be creating stable, vivid images free of disturbances, it was a match made in heaven. Barco’s visualization technology is strewn throughout the entire complex, from pavilions to educational areas, from cinemas to custom-built entertainment rooms.
Barco systems at Autostadt include well over twenty-five powerful high-brightness projectors. Highlights of the installation are the three three-chip DLP, SXGA+ RLM R6+ projectors at the ‘MobiVersum’, a time- and car-themed edutainment area where children learn the importance of relaxing in today’s fast-paced society through several movies and workshops, and a 360° dome cinema with nine three-chip DLP, SXGA+ SLM R12 projectors.
Autostadt’s most remarkable attraction, however, is the ‘MobiGlobe,’ a simulated interior of an enormous car, where each car window is a gargantuan, tailor-made 25mm thick movie screen powered by an SLM R12 projector, whose image is reflected back on the screen through a mirror, to decrease the system’s footprint and optimize its use of space. Visitors are taken on a journey through the history of mobility in four distinct places – Bangkok, Mumbai, Los Angeles and Zürich – to demonstrate each culture’s different attitudes, uses and perceptions of automobiles as a central element in modern life.
