Berlin International Film Festival - Berlinale

Exclusive digital cinema projection partner

Every year, around 20,000 professional attendees including press and filmmakers - from over 100 countries – gather in Germany's exciting capital for one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world: the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). Additionally some 300.000 tickets are sold to the public. Barco has been the festival's exclusive digital cinema projection partner since 2006, playing a major role in the increased importance of digital screenings in the festival program.

This year's edition took place from 10 - 20 February 2011 in cinemas throughout Berlin. Barco digital cinema projectors were set up specially for this festival at the Berlinale-Palast, Urania, ,CinemaxX 10, Delphi Filmpalast, CineStar 5, Friedrichstadtpalast, Kino im Martin Gropius Bau and Haus der Kulturen der Welt Auditorium.

Celebrating 3D art house movies

For the first time in history, the Berlinale included 3D movies in its official program, thanks to the 3D digital cinema projectors supplied by Barco. With the 3D movies, the Berlinale wanted to explore the medium's artistic potential following its recent triumph in Hollywood blockbusters.

The selected 3D movies contributed to the Berlinale's more daring program this year. Legendary choreographer Pina Bausch was featured in the world premiere of Wim Wender's 3D dance film. Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams – a 3D documentary about prehistoric paintings in France – had its European premiere during the festival. And Michel Ocelots' Tales of the Night was an animated 3D movie as part of the official competition program.
