3D mapping on the rock wall of a canyon? Barco’s HDX-W18 projectors are up to the job
A lake, a canyon and nothing but nature. It is not exactly where you’d expect to see dance, acrobatics, music and 3D mapping. And yet, Lake Gålå in Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, recently was the décor for an unusually exciting – wild and raw - performance of Peer Gynt, Norway’s national epic.
To fully immerse the audience in the story, director Svein Sturla Hungnes came up with the innovative idea of 3D mapping. AV expert Blank developed 3D graphs, visual effects and installed three compact yet powerful Barco HDX-W18 projectors to create the illusion of rocks falling, lightning, a green upward-flowing river and a spectacular rockslide. “3D mapping on something as rugged and unstructured as the rock wall of the canyon – 30 meters wide and 18 meters high – is a huge challenge,” said Kent Bakke, owner of Blank. “Yet the HDX-W18 projectors proved to be perfectly up to the job.” Raving reviews confirmed the success of this original approach.
