Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel

Ping pong balls, pools, pounding music … and Barco projectors

Comfort, luxury and partying – day and night – in a unique beach setting: the Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel has everything that party-goers could dream of – and much more besides. To uphold its reputation as Ibiza’s hottest beach club, the hotel had planned an amazing 12-hour party to kick off the 2013 holiday season. The requirements? To do something out of the ordinary with projection.

Barco distributor XL Video teamed up with French production company High Scream to meet Ushuaiai’s exacting requirements. Romain Pissenem from High Scream and XL Video’s Ian Woodall came up with the idea for a projection mapping onto the hotel’s 30m x 20m swimming pool - the largest ever projection screen to date in Ibiza.

The set-up was a challenging one. To ensure a bright and visible projection, the team needed to make the pool opaque without adding a solid cover over the top. Half a million white ping pong balls were put to use – floating on the surface of the water – and creating a suitable canvas for the projections. Four Barco HDF-W26 projectors did the rest, creating the vibrant images on the surface. The projectors were managed and controlled by XL Video.

The result was a brightly colored pool that amazed all the party-goers. The 6000-strong crowd partied long into the night.

Ian Woodall: “It was a really interesting and challenging gig, with a great visual result – although I still wonder where you order 500,000 ping pong balls from!”
