Barco wins Eurocontrol outsourcing contract for ERIS HMI Package
KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 17 December 2004 – Barco has won an important outsourcing contract from Eurocontrol, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation. Under this contract, Barco will maintain and further develop the ERIS Human Machine Interface Package for air traffic controllers and pilots, based on its ODS TOOLBOX software. Outsourcing allows Eurocontrol to reduce costs while retaining industrial-strength software quality. In the long run, Eurocontrol also expects outsourcing to accelerate the introduction of new evolving technologies. The new contract underlines the long-lasting relationship between Eurocontrol and Barco, and is of strategic importance for its potential in the field of research and development. The agreement covers a period of one and a half years.
ERIS, the EATM Reference Industry-based ATM Simulation and Trials Platform, is the standard platform required to support validation activities for the European Air Traffic Management (ATM) program and the European Commission’s Single European Sky initiative. It has been developed by Eurocontrol Experimental Centre (EEC) in Brétigny, near Paris. ERIS is used in major European ATM projects, such as the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC, the Netherlands), the Central European Air Traffic Services program (CEATS), the Research Development and Simulation Center (CRDS, Hungary), and projects under the 5th and 6th European Framework Program, like Gate-to-Gate (G2G) and the European ATM Validation Platform (EVP).Barco will take up the challenge to preserve and improve the quality of the software development and maintenance that has been available to the EEC, while improving efficiency at the same time. A next step will be to look for the best possible synergies from the combined expertise of EEC in the field of operational real-time ATM simulation and Barco as the worldwide supplier of ODS TOOLBOX software for turnkey radar surveillance solutions.
For Barco the agreement offers the possibility to align the evolution of its product portfolio in general and the ODS TOOLBOX in particular with the most advanced operational ATM procedures evaluated and validated at the EEC. Eurocontrol on the other hand, will benefit from Barco’s technical insight into cutting-edge technology for operational graphical user interfaces for radar surveillance applications.
