Lumiere chooses Barco’s iStudio solution for Satellite play-out in Cyprus

Kuurne, Belgium – September 20th 2004 - Barco is proud to announce that its iStudio solution has been chosen by Lumiere for continuity play out, monitoring and master control of their terrestrial and satellite broadcast network. The iStudio solution is an advanced all-in-one solution for managed monitoring. Its high quality displays with rear screen projection, dedicated graphic controller and web based operating software make it an excellent choice for a company such as Lumiere where quality and reliability is a priority.

Known for display quality and flexibility, the iStudio is particularly well suited to Lumiere due to the number of channels that can be managed at the same time. The site, strategically located in the center of Cyprus, is a multi play out center where currently Lumiere plays out several channels into their subscriber base. Barco’s iStudio solution is initially configured for 32 external and 12 other feeds.

In addition, Barco’s iStudio solution monitors ingest feeds from a variety of sources with the minimal intervention from operational staff and is therefore highly flexible and able to grow with the needs of Lumiere. Barco’s iStudio will also be used as a continuity suite once commissioned and prior to handing over that work to a dedicated facility. Barco is well aware that a control center represents the heart of the broadcasting business and the iStudio’s design makes it particularly reliable.

Established since 1987, Lumiere’s broadcast facilities are found in a 3,000m2 building complex which consists of two production studios, vision and audio control galleries, continuity suites, master control, central apparatus room, linear and non-linear editing suites, dubbing studios, graphics suites, media libraries, storage areas, administration offices, etc. It also houses a satellite teleport, a wide range of TVRO terminals and a 140 Mbps bi-directional international fibre connection via the local Telecom Operator.

In late 2003 the project of upgrading its facilities to digital has started with the aim of streamlining and increasing the efficiency of its own operations enabling even more services to be offered to third party clients in Cyprus, Middle East and Europe. The upgraded end-to-end digital facilities should be fully commissioned to start operations in January of 2005.

By April 2004 the number of active paying subscribers reached 62,000 representing 30% market penetration. Lumiere’s successful pay-TV business relies on its premium quality content, both local and foreign, mainly being movies and sport. In July of 2004 the two pay-TV channels started transmitting via digital satellite on Eutelsat Hotbird at 13 deg. East.

Barco will install the iStudio solution comprising of 3x1 cDR-67DL 67” DLP SXGA rear projection display with capability to display 32 SDI signals, 12 PAL signals along with audio and video quality monitoring.
