Barco supplies software for new radar simulation training system of German Water Police Academy

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 7 July 2005 – Barco, in cooperation with ELNA Elektro-Navigation und Industrie, and in-innovative navigation, has recently been awarded a 1 million Euro contract to supply a new radar simulation training system to the German Water Police Academy (Wasserschutzpolizei-Schule, WSPS) in Hamburg. The new system will upgrade the existing system to cope with the latest training requirements. It will be used by the Hamburg Water Police Academy for the training of all German Water Police officers.

The new simulation system consists of a simulator, a dual operator console, and three trainee consoles, equipped like a real ship –bridge with the same radar, radar display, and navigation instruments. Advanced simulation software will create diverse traffic scenarios and sensor measurements, which will stimulate the hardware components on the training ship bridge consoles. The software will in turn react to the steering commands given by the trainees that are working at the bridge consoles. The trainees will experience optimal training conditions as the bridge instruments will be identical to those on the real ships of the water police, and the dynamic behavior will feel very realistic.

For this project, Barco will supply the entire simulation software, based on the product OPSCENTER SIMULATION - VIRTUAL WATERWAY (VWW). VIRTUAL WATERWAY is a virtual navigation environment specifically designed to simulate traffic on inland waterways and coastal waters. The simulation focuses on realistically modeling the dynamics of vessels in water and on generating typical sensor measurements such as radar, Automated Identification System (AIS), or Global Positioning System (GPS) data, including environmental influences like rain, wind, or current. Thanks to the ability to simulate a large number of vessels and objects, even complex traffic situations can be created, which enables the trainers to develop a variety of diverse scenarios for flexible and comprehensive training lessons. Other benefits of the new system include a modern user interface, support for multi-user and multi-session operations, and state-of-the-art radar emulation.

ELNA Elektro-Navigation und Industrie will supply hardware components such as new radar processors and Voyage Data Recorders. in-innovative navigation GmbH is responsible for the delivery of RADARpilot720°, a modern certificated inland navigation system, and the development of the interface between the simulator’s software and hardware. Special attention will go to the conversion of synthetic digital radar data into analog radar video signals.
