Barco introduces innovative sensor technology in next generation 24/7 rear-projection video wall displays

The new OV-D2 series’ sensor technology provides brightness and color stability over time and across the entire display

Infocomm, Anaheim, CA, US – 19 June 2007 – Barco, a leader in display and visualization solutions for selected professional markets, announces the availability of its next generation video wall displays, featuring its proprietary sensor technology that provides brightness and color stability over time and across the entire display.

Barco’s Sense6 technology is an active, sensor-based, system that analyzes what the operator sees by measuring the output of the video wall rather than a specific optical component of the projector system. The technology results in equal brightness, color, contrast and midtones for all cubes that compose the video wall.

“Sense6 gives operators a sense of perfection with an image accuracy and uniformity that is second to none.” said Mathieu Massart, Director Product Management at Barco’s Security & Monitoring Division. Mr. Massart continued, “Barco’s proprietary Sense6 technology continuously measures brightness and color characteristics and adjusts the color space to provide an image that is most convenient for the human eye. No distracting luminance or color differences. No frequent maintenance or manual adjustments. No impact on the wall content whatsoever.”

Barco's video wall products are based on Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology and feature built-in lamp and controller redundancy to support 24/7 mission-critical applications. Through a modular design, they cover the needs of nearly any control room or backdrop application: the OV-D2 series include video wall modules ranging from 50” to 120” and resolutions from XGA to SXGA+, stackable to any size and resolution, curved or straight.

The OV-D2 series brings better performance at lower operational cost: new brighter lamps with longer lifetimes, airbearing color wheel with longer lifetime, sealed off engine all contribute to a video wall that requires less maintenance.

Barco's OV-D2 series comes with Barco Wall Control Manager, a software package that continuously supports worry-free operation of the video wall over the network. Second level maintenance can be done by web access to each projection cube by a standard web browser.

Barco will be demonstrating the new OV-815 80” (2x2) rear projection video wall display with the new video wall controller, TransForm AX6 (Dual-core Intel Xeon CPU) and the SVC-II second-generation streaming video card. Sense6 in six steps

Barco's new OV-D2 video wall series come with Sense6, a unique sensor technology that provides brightness and color stability over time and across the entire display. The proprietary Sense6 technology continuously measures brightness and color characteristics and adjusts the color space to provide an image that is most convenient for the human eye.

Sense6 technology results in:

1. Brightness and color uniformity across the cube

Due to optical design, the brightness and color uniformity levels of the individual OV-D2 projection cubes are extremely high from center to edge, as well as in the corners.

2. Continuous color uniformity across the entire video wall

A true color sensor continuously measures the color performance of each projection cube. The Primary Color Adjust algorithm matches all projection cubes to the same color, based upon the sensor information. This patented color feedback system operates in the background and adjusts the final color on-screen, compensating for tolerance difference of the optical path and color wheel as well as for color changes due to lamp aging or insertion of new lamps.

3. Continuous brightness uniformity across the entire video wall

With Sense6 technology, operators are assured of luminance uniformity over time and across the entire video wall. A brightness sensor continuously measures the luminance characteristics of the projection module. This brightness information is used by the optical dimmer functionality to adapt and match the luminance of all cubes. The optical dimmer allows contrast with High Dynamic Range, which means video wall contrast is twice that of conventional systems. This makes it possible to see elements with a low brightness level, e.g. shades or dark scenes in movies.

4. Perfect grayscales

Whereas the color locking functionality preserves color and the brightness locking functionality preserves white and black, the Sense6 gray locking functionality assures a consistent linearity between white and black, regardless of lamp brightness, or lamp age.

5. The system works in the background and doesn’t require special patterns on the screen, so content is never influenced and operators are never distracted. For instance during automatic lamp change, the wall adjusts itself taking this new lamp into account.

6. The color spectrum of new lamps is stored inside the intelligent I-lamp to be able to recalibrate each sensor preventing long term drift.
