Barco and China National Petroleum Corporation create largest display wall in Chinese oil and gas industry

Shanghai, CHINA, 24 July 2008 — Barco, a world leader in visualization and display solutions will team with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNCP) to create the largest control display wall in China’s oil and gas industry.

The new display wall will be installed at the CNPC China building, located in the Dongcheng district of Beijing. The building is home to the Beijing Oil and Gas Pipeline Control Center, the largest control center of its type in the world. Composed of Barco’s new OV-D2 projection cubes, the center’s new display will allow engineers to control long distance pipelines moving crude oil, product oil and natural gas across mainland China.

CNPC is a world-leading, integrated international energy company with businesses encompassing oil and gas upstream/downstream operations, oil field services, engineering and construction, petroleum material and equipment manufacturing and supply chain services. The company also offers capital management, finance and insurance services, as well as the overseeing of new energy operations.

The CNPC installation features 54 OV-D2 80” display cubes (in an 18 x 3 configuration), driven by the Transform A display controller and featuring Barco’s new SCN system that allows the workstation image to be shared throughout the company’s network. OV-D2 delivers a long list of advantages, including the latest DLP™ technology, high brightness, superb contrast, and large viewing angles providing maximum readability. The system is engineered for ease of maintenance, using durable components with high reliability from lamp to screen. What’s more, its Ethernet communication format allows for fast access and upgrading.

“With Barco’s help, we are able to dramatically upgrade our monitoring process,” says Qi Guocheng, manager of Automatization Department. “In fact, when we laid out our requirements, Barco was the obvious choice in meeting our solution needs. The end result will be a superior visualization backdrop that places our control room among the finest in the industry, not just in China, but around the world.”

“When you walk through this type of control room as an observer, it’s somewhat easy to take for granted the visual element of a center’s operation,” says Frank Christiaens, Managing Director Barco China. “But behind the scenes, there’s a huge amount of activity going on both technically and strategically. At the CNCP control room, there’s just no room for error on the part of engineers. So it’s absolutely imperative that we provide them a product that meets their functionality needs and operates flawlessly day-to-day. We feel we’ve worked closely with our friends a CNPC to come up with an ideal display solution; teaming with them, and they’ve provided us a unique opportunity to do what we do best.”
