BARCO provides Control Room systems for American Satellite-TV service provider DIRECTV

iStudio contract with a total value of 3.7 million USD confirms leading position of Barco Control Rooms

Kuurne, April 27, 2001 - Barco Projection Systems, world leader in large screen visualization, announces that its business unit Barco Control Rooms, has sold 45 BARCO display solutions and 45 control systems to DIRECTV, Inc. The contract has a total value of 3.7 million USD. DIRECTV, USA’s leading Digital Satellite-TV service provider, offers its clients more than 225 channels of entertainment and information programming.

BARCO’s iStudio solution will allow the DIRECTV broadcast center to monitor a higher density of video images within a fixed physical space. In this way, the DIRECTV controllers will be able to monitor up to 1,252 video channels and 2,520 audio channels

The iStudio solution consists of a wall of one or more rear projection units. It replaces the traditional control room in TV studios, provided with a number of fixed 9, 14, and 20-inch monitors. With iStudio the operators are no longer confined to a limited number of monitors, as they can now size and move a virtual monitor anywhere they want on the screen for maximum viewing and ergonomics. This not only offers them a remarkable flexibility but also the possibility to provide more channels with images at the same time. One BARCO display of 67 inch (170 cm) can visualize up to 30 channels, i.e. replace 30 monitors.

“The BARCO products were selected as an integrated video signal processing and video display system,” said Frank Hironaka, senior director, Broadcast Systems, DIRECTV, Inc. “BARCO offers a system solution with a combination of clean image presentation and built-in monitoring, which makes it well-suited to the intended application.”

Jean-Marie Vanalderweireldt and Dirk Hendrickx, Business Unit Managers Barco Control Rooms, add: “As the leader in Digital Satellite-TV entertainment with more than 9.8 million customers, DIRECTV requires highly efficient means to monitor its various channels. The new Barco Control Room system will deliver substantial benefits for both the DIRECTV broadcast center employees and customers of the DIRECTV programming service.”
