Barco joins Joint Strike Fighter International Integrated Product Development Team

Kortrijk, Belgium, 21 February 2006 – Visualization specialist Barco announced today that it has been selected by L-3 Communications, through its Display Systems division (L-3 display Systems), to provide technology for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Panoramic Cockpit Display (PCD). Under the terms of the agreement, Barco will join the International Integrated Product Development Team (I-IPDT) led by L-3 Display Systems, under a Lockheed Martin Aeronautics contract. The integrated team will design, qualify and manufacture the PCD including a highly redundant F-35 JSF PCD display management computer subsystem. The Barco PCD contract content holds a potential value of over $15 million over the life of the JSF program.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 is a 5th generation, supersonic, multi-role stealth fighter designed to replace aging AV-8B Harriers, A-10s, F-16s, F/A-18 Hornets and United Kingdom Harrier GR.7s and Sea Harriers. The aircraft is being built in three variants: a conventional take-off and landing aircraft for the U.S. and other Air Forces; a carrier based variant for the U.S. Navy; and a short take-off and vertical landing aircraft for the U.S. Marine Corps, the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. More than 2,500 Joint Strike Fighters are projected to enter service with the United States and United Kingdom. Many other armed forces around the world also are making plans to operate F-35s. First flight is planned for fall 2006, with delivery of the first operational aircraft scheduled for 2009.

L-3 Display Systems will lead Barco and other I-IPDT members to design, qualify and manufacture the high-resolution, high-brightness, night vision-compatible 20”x 8” active matrix liquid crystal display and a highly redundant display management computer. The F-35 PCD provides pilot control and display for the major functions of the F-35 aircraft, including flight displays, sensor displays, communication, radio and navigation systems and identification systems, and provides the pilot with total situational awareness.
