BARCO’s Graphics Controllers Selected for Micro-EARTS Controller Workstation

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, May 23rd, 1997 -- BARCO Display Systems, Chromatics division has been chosen by Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management, St. Paul, Minnesota, to provide the new BARCO PCI 4700 high performance graphics controller for integration into the Microprocessor Enroute Automated Radar Tracking System (Micro-EARTS) controller workstation.

Micro-EARTS is a very advanced terminal and en route air traffic management system which is nationally certified and operationally deployed by the Federal Aviation Administration. Richard Jenderny, Micro-EARTS program manager, stated that “After extensive testing and technical analysis and costing review, it is our determination that BARCO provides the best value-added solution to the Micro-EARTS effort.” Jerderny further commented that “Micro-EARTS represents a low-cost COTS solution to present and future air traffic management needs.”

The BARCO Chromatics new PCI 4700 is a powerful 2048 x 2048 single board PCI graphics controller with extensive X-window software support, which provides the capability to record and playback air traffic information in real time, enhancing system safety by providing immediate event analysis. The PCI 4700 graphics drawing acceleration capability increases the graphics performance which is very critical for time-symbology information applications such as air traffic control.

Micro-EARTS completed installation of Controller Workstations (MCW) at Shaw AFB in November 1996, with additional MCW’s to be slated for installation in 1997 for Nellis AFB, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Fairbanks, Alaska. The FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center and the FAA Aeronautical Center have received a Micro-EARTS for system maintenance support and training purposes.
